Guatemala plans to create a new center for temporary migrants at the border with Mexico, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The President of Guatemala, Bernardo Arevalo, wishing to avoid clashes with the new American administration, stated that the center will provide "the best possible conditions" for migrants.
The open center, which can accommodate 250 people, is planned to be established in mid-2026 in the town of Tecun Uman at the border with Mexico, where migrants arrive from Mexico by land route.
The President of Guatemala emphasized: "We want to provide migrants with a warm welcome and improve their experience crossing the border."
