The Guatemalan Baldomero Samayoa Recinos, considered one of the leaders of the 'Los Huistas' cartel and wanted by U.S. authorities, was arrested in Chiapas, Mexico, and handed over to Guatemala. The capture took place in the southernmost part of Chiapas thanks to a joint operation between the authorities of Guatemala, the United States, and Mexico.
The Guatemalan Minister of the Interior, Francisco Jiménez, announced that Baldomero was captured and transported to Guatemala by Mexican authorities in cooperation with the other countries. After his handover, he was taken to the Guatemalan Air Force and later to the Court Tower to face his legal proceedings.
Baldomero Samayoa Recinos, known as 'Chicharra', is identified as one of the leaders of the Los Huistas cartel, a criminal organization dedicated to cocaine trafficking with links to other Mexican cartels. The U.S. Treasury Department has sanctioned 'Los Huistas' since 2012.
In previous years, members of 'Los Huistas' have been linked to various crimes in northern Guatemala, including the brother of a Guatemalan deputy who was murdered after serving a sentence for drug trafficking. In 2025, Guatemala has captured several fugitives wanted for crimes primarily related to drug trafficking.
